Oslo and Oyer

January 2003

Oyer

When we arrived in Oyre is was -17°C - possibly the coldest temperature I have ever experienced. The cabin had not been heated for a while, so it, too, was about -17°C. Turning on the radiators was not an option - there are none. Jan-Erik instead opened the oven and turned it on. The electric hob - on as well. I was about to express my outrage about the waste of energy (and carbon), when Jan-Erik calmly pointed out that all the electricity was not only super cheap, but perfectly clean - hydro power. I keep referring back to this moment - it came close to an epiphany that sustainable energy can be abundant and cheap. A life lesson.

In the end we resorted to traditional forms of heat: a fire and whiskey (followed by some slightly dicey skiing).

Up until this holiday I thought of myself as a reasonably fast skier. Not so. Jan-Erik would leave me in the dust.
