When we rolled our bikes onto the ferry, we were rather intimidated to see that there was already a bike of a ‘proper’ traveller - someone who would know their stuff, unlike us. That someone turned out to be Tony. And Tony really did know his stuff - and what stuff to take travelling. In Tony’s case comfort was not to be compromised - Tony travels with a proper pillow, with downes!
Mind you, neither Tony nor us knew which the first turn off the ferry was (remember this is many years before sat-nav), and it turned out the locals didn’t know either. We decided that New Zealand was roughly East-South-East.

Next lesson: test your stove before you go. We had the stove and we had the gas bottle - the only snag was that the two were not compatible. Makes you feel like a right novice.
Tony not only had a pillow, he had a seat, too. Take note what matters in life.

Our first camp spot. It is always a gamble how long to keep cycling until one finds something that is ‘good enough’ or to go a bit furter for something better. On this occasion we went a bit further - and what a spot.
